خلفية الكاتب:
ولد مارك توين (1835-1910)، المكنى سابقا صمويل لانغهورن كليمنس، في ميسوري، بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية. وقد عمل أولا كطباع، ثم سافر إلى عدة أماكن. كما أحب نهر ميسوري، إذ عمل على القوارب بالنهر. لقد أخذ اسمه الأدبي من رجال القوارب، الذين صرخوا "بالعلامة توين" لمساعدة القبطان للمحافظة على القارب وسط النهر.

وخلال الحرب الأهلية (1861-1865) ترك النهر وشرع يكتب . وحمل كتابه الأول عنوان الضفدع القافز (1865). غير أن كتبه المشهورة كانت مغامرات توم سوير (1876)، ومغامرة هكلبيري فين (1885)، الذي ذكر فيه الكثير من الصبية الذين التقى بهم في ميسوري عندما كان طفلا. كما كان توين أيضا رجل أعمال ، لكنه لم يكن ناجحا في عمله التجاري، حيث خسر كل نقوده. لقد اتسمت كتبه غالبا بالفكاهة إلا أنها كانت جيدة في وصف الحياة الأمريكية. وفي كتبه التالية يكتب توين أكثر عن مشكلات أمريكا. وتحولت معظم كتبه الآن إلى أفلام وبرامج تعرض على شاشات التلفزيون. ويتناول توين في قصة (الأمير والفقير) حياة طفلين عاشا في لندن عام 1547.

كان توم كانتي صبيا فقيرا جدا، إذ عاش في لندن بغرفة واحدة مع أسرته. وكان أبوه لصا، كما وجب على توم أيضا السرقة لتوفير الطعام والشراب لأفراد آسرته. وعاش معهم أندرو، الرجل الحنون جدا، والذي علم توم القراءة والكتابة، وكيف يكون محترما .

ففي كل ليلة قص على توم حكايات عن الملوك والأمراء، حيث تعلم توم كيف يصبح أميرا. كما أراد أن يصبح غنيا ويعيش في قصر. وغالبا ما زار القصر في لندن.

وذات يوم رأى احد الجنود, الذي كان يحرس القصر، الصبي الفقير، مما أغضبه ذلك، فإذا به يضرب توم بقسوة على وجهه. ووقع بصر الأمير الموجود داخل القصر على الجندي الذي انهال على توم بالضرب، مما دعا الأمير إلى دعوة توم لدخول القصر، حيث قدم نفسه لتوم على أنه إدوارد. وكان يبدو أن الأمير مهتم لسماع قصة حياة توم .

وبعد أن سأل الأمير عدة أسئلة، قال "أتمنى لو أفعل الأشياء التي تفعلها." ولم يتمكن توم من تصديق أذنيــــه. لمـاذا يرغب الأمير العيش كهذا الصبي الفقير!؟ وجالت في خاطر الأمير فكرة مفادها استبدال ملابسهما. والآن، يبدو توم وكأنه الأمير فيما يبدو الأمير وكأنه الصبي الفقير. لقد انفجرا ضاحكين. و ترك ادوارد القصر للتجول في لندن، حيث رأى بعض أطفال المدرسة، لكن عندما اخبرهم بأنه الأمير قالوا: "كلا. إنك طفل فقير." ثم قذفوه في النهر آنئذ. لقد خرج ادوارد مستبردا ومتسخا. كما شعر بأنه لوحده وخائفا.

وفي اليوم التالي، وفي داخل القصر، نهض توم ليجد نفسه بأنه لم يعد أميرا بل ملكا ! وجاء الناس إليه لرؤيته. واخبره رجل يدعى لورد هيرتفورد بوجوب الاستعداد للتتويج ملكا. لكن كل ما أراده توم هو اللعب قرب النهر. وقال توم لنفسه "ملابسي جميلة، والطعام رائع، إلا أنني أريد العودة للبيت. لا أريد أن أكون ملكا."
واندهش اللورد هيرتفورد والرجال المهمون هناك لانحناء الأمير للولد الصغير. لقد حدق اللورد هيرتفورد في توم وكذلك ادوارد ومن ثم العودة ثانية كي يحدق بتوم "إنهما يملكان نفس الشعر ونفس العيون." ثم قال "إنهما يتكلمان نفس الكلام. ربما أن هذا الطفل ليس الأمير !"
وأعلن ادوارد "أنني لست الولد الفقير. وأستطيع إخباركم أين ختم الملك . سوف تجدونه وراء المرآة في غرفة نومي، حيث وضعته هناك." لقد أمر اللورد هيرتفورد الحارس بان يذهب ويبحث عن الختم. وبعد فترة قصيرة عاد الحارس ومعه ختم الملك، إذ وجد في المكان الذي حدده ادوارد. وغير الولدان ملابسـهما مرة ثانية.

وتوج ادوارد ملكا. وكان ملكا جيدا جدا لأنه عرف كيف عاش الفقراء. وقد دعا توم للعيش معه في القصر. وكانا صديقين جيدين. ولم يعد توم يرى والده القاسي مرة أخرى، وعاش حياة هنيئة. وعندما تقدم توم في العمر, قرر كتابة قصته التي أسماها:
